Once there was a little boy who loved to visit his grandparents. But he couldn’t fall asleep in the squeaky, creaky bed at their house. Grandfather thought a little cat would help. Or a little dog. Maybe a little pig? Soon the bed was very full, but it was still squeaky and creaky. Would the little boy–and all his new friends–ever be able to fall asleep? Fun animal sounds, repetition, and lots of squeaking and creaking make this the kind of story young children will love to join in reading.

Pat Thomson is the author of several picture books in England. This is her first U.S. publication. Niki Daly’s books include Jamela’s Dress and Bravo, Zan Angelo! From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2-A different take on a cumulative folktale that was also adapted by Laura Simms as a picture book entitled The Squeaky Door (Crown, 1991; o.p.). In this version, a child visits his grandparents in the country and loves everything about being there-except the old, noisy bed. Each night the same thing happens: "-Grandmother said good night, Grandfather said good night, and the little boy climbed into bed. Then the bed went squeak, squeak, creak! And the little boy cried waaugh-." Grandfather suggests getting one animal after another to help the youngster sleep, but still the boy wails, and all of his companions join in, until one night, the bed breaks. Grandfather buys a new one, but the child is still unhappy. Not to worry, the parrot-the last pet to join the crew-flies to the footboard and replicates the squeaky racket "all night long." Children will enjoy the rhythmic cadences of the recurring phrases. Daly's sketchy watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations depict quirky-looking animals and appealing humans, including an aging hippie grandfather complete with yin/yang pajamas. The sound effects are incorporated into the artwork in dialogue balloons, which sometimes makes it difficult to keep them in proper order, but also makes for a lively layout. A great story in a new guise.
