From Library Journal:

The Second Carnegie Inquiry was de signed to study poverty in South Afri ca. Along with the papers submitted to this 1984 conference was a set of twen ty photographic essays intended to doc ument pictorially South African pover ty. Four hundred of the photographs were selected for an exhibit, and it is from these images that this book is compiled. The book not only docu ments poverty but presents life in South Africa for its black citizens as well, for the vast majority of the poor in South Africa are black, especially the women and children in rural areas. In many ways this book parallels Peter Magu bane's Magubane's South Africa ( LJ 5/ 15/78). What makes it even more useful is that it includes extensive and valu able text from the conference's re search papers. A compelling portrait of South Africa that belongs in all subject collections. Paul H. Thomas, Hoover Inst. Lib., Stanford, Cal.

From Publishers Weekly:

A project of the Second Carnegie Inquiry into Poverty and Development in Southernstet Africa (whose activities, funded by the Carnegie Corp., included a conference in Cape Town in 1984), this collection of 136 pictures taken by 20 South African photographers poignantly documents the evils of apartheid. Wendy Schwegmann captures a black man dismantling his home in Mogopa as he prepares to be resettled by the government in his tribal "homeland." Lesley Lawson shows a shabbily dressed black maid polishing a table in a lavish corporate conference room. Ben MacIennan records four black workers in their "dormitory" in front of tiers of concrete beds, which resemble bathtubs. The introduction and extensive commentaries by Wilson, a professor at the University of Cape Town, offer an impassioned, statistical account of the extent and horror of poverty in South Africa.
