Kelly traces the long, complex, often contentious process by which the U.S. Army decided what kind of main battle tank it wanted, then designed, built and trained its soldiers to operate it. Early critics have predicted that the Abrams M-1 will prove so unreliable as to be almost useless. But the author, a correspondent for the Washington Star and U.S. News & World Report , argues that the M-1 has already proven itself in European training maneuvers and in war games at the National Training Center in California, and will remain the mainstay of U.S. armor forces into the early years of the next century. This is a well-researched and well-written journalist's account of the development of the Army's Abrams tank (the "king" of the killing zone). As such, it gives an even-handed story of how the project was handled. Background information on the history of armored warfare is extensive, placing the Abrams in perspective. The author's intent is simply to tell in a straightforward manner how the tank was developed, not to lay blame or heap praise. Kelly succeeds in his goal, and the book is a needed corrective to much in the media over the past few years. The interest level has dropped, however, making this a contribution to history rather than current debate. Only for military collections.
