9780394529646: The Invisible Bar
From Library Journal:

Oral history techniques, combined with more traditional primary resources, lend a captivating authenticity to this overview of a surprisingly neglected topic, taking the reader beyond the basic survey provided in Cynthia Fuchs Epstein's Women in Law ( LJ 11/1/81). The narrative and anecdotes span 350 years, commencing with women's fight for the right to practice and study law, and culminating in the experiences of women attorneys and jurists today; they support Morello's argument that the legal profession does not yet recognize and accept women comfortably or equitably. This investigation offers a distinctive perspective to students of law, women's history, and American graduate education, as well as to those interested in the struggles facing women in pursuit of a career at the bar. From Publishers Weekly:

In this history of women lawyers in America, a New York attorney traces the 350-year-old struggle that, to a certain degree, is still being waged in some form today. As late as 1950, for example, women who had crashed the barriers of Harvard Law School were subjected to a "Ladies Day" ritual in which they recited for the amusement of all-male classes. As Morello tells the stories of the women who helped promote justice, beginning with Margaret Brent, the first woman lawyer in America, who arrived in the colonies in 1638, and ending with the first female Supreme Court Justice, she shows their commonalityan unwillingness to be cowed professionally because of their gender. Rich in entertaining anecdotes and finely researched, the survey makes heady reading. Illustrations not seen by PW. (October 30
