It is not immediately apparent how this attractive book is to be used. A check of the general index failed to turn up aspirin or ibuprofen. For these, one needs to consult a generic and brand-name index that starts inconveniently on page 64. But once the indexes are cracked, this is quite a good guide. The body consists of an alphabetical list of drugs by generic name with one page devoted to each, providing brand names, dosage, possible adverse effects, interactions, and special precautions. Though not as excellent as the AARP Pharmacy Service Prescription Drug Handbook ( LJ 1/88), this guide is nevertheless worth considering, particularly since it covers prescription and over-the-counter drugs in a single volume.Anne Twitchell, EPA Headquarters Lib., Washington,
