Marc Riboud, renowned photographer, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and World Photography Organisation Lifetime Achievement award winner, became one of the first European photographers to go to China in 1957. This book, published in 1981, provided a previously-unavailable look into life in communist China. Riboud writes in a prologue note, "For so long, and until so recently, China was a closed and secret land where the huge transformations taking place were almost always hidden from foreign eyes. Today the doors are opening." The book is a fascinating glimpse into history, showcasing art and culture, personal celebrations, and a peek into the lives of many different individuals, from the wealthy to the poor.
