PreSchool-Grade 1 Katie and the smallest bear are both lonely, so the smallest bear wriggles under the zoo fence for a day of fun. Bold colors define uncluttered fall scenery, and both characters have a wholesome childlike roundness. However warm and cheerful, this variation on a familiar fantasy theme lacks tension as much as distinction. One classic picture book on the same theme, but with more imagination, is De Regniers' May I Bring a Friend? (Atheneum, 1964). Carolyn Noah, Worcester Public Library, Mass.
