Peterkin, a little boy in bib overalls and bright yellow boots and cap, helps a baby robin back into his nest in It's Spring, Peterkin . Narration is as simple as the plot. It's an uncluttered, gentle story featuring object recognition and action without hyperactivity. Beep! Beep! I'm a Jeep! shows toddlers pretending, with household items as props, to be a fire truck, a train, a tugboat, etc. Accompanying each of these watercolor and ink illustrations of children at play is an illustration of the real vehicle in motion. The pictures contain details that introduce humor, information, and an added dimension to the game of "let's pretend." Text is limited to two sentences per vehicle. In Patrick and His Grandpa, Patrick Bear takes his grandpa on a tour of his town, pointing out the trolley car, bakery, toy store, park, and merry-go-round. Narrative and colored pencil illustrations include just enough detail to give older toddlers some extras to ponder. Huckle and Lowly Worm plan a picnic at the beach in My First Word Book. Many familiar Scarry characters are present at the outing, which provides an excuse for scenes of Huckle's neighborhood, the supermarket, and the beach.
