The bad babies at a birthday party introduce the colors
"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
PreSchool-K This companion to the author's The Bad Babies' Counting Book (Knopf, 1986) is not effective as a story or as a concept book on colors. The featured color is often only a small item on the page, with other colors more prominent. Also, sometimes the colors in the drawings are not distinct enough. For example, the gray balloon looks light blue. The story of a birthday party attended by a multi-ethnic group of misbehaving babies is written in lackluster, sing-song rhymes. One of many color concept book that is more successfully executed is Colors (Bradbury, 1969) by John Reiss. For books which deftly incorporate colors into the story, stick with such gems as Arnold Lobel's The Great Blueness and Other Predicaments (Harper, 1968) or Oh, Were They Ever Happy (Doubleday, 1978) by Peter Spier. Candy Bertelson, Multnomah County Library, Portland, Oreg.
