Rats are everywhere in the town of Hamelin, until the Pied Piper plays his magic flute.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- The classic legend of the piper who rids a town of rats and subsequently steals away the children when payment is refused is simply adapted in this version for beginning readers. The basic plot elements are present, and Hautzig has maintained the essence of the tale, including an historical note explaining that over a hundred children did indeed vanish from Hamelin "many years ago." Short sentences with repetition of words and structure facilitate the process of reading and build confidence for beginners. Dialogue is balanced with narrative passages, providing a variety of writing styles and reading material. While not as eloquent as many other available versions, this volume serves early readers well, many of whom will welcome this account of a story already familiar to them. Schindler's full-color watercolor illustrations assist in conveying the action of the text. --Starr LaTronica, North Berkeley Library, CA
