Andrew Newell Wyeth (1917 - 2009) was a visual artist, primarily a realist painter, working predominantly in a regionalist style. He was one of the best-known U.S. artists of the middle 20th century. In his art, Wyeth's favorite subjects were the land and people around him, both in his hometown of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and at his summer home in Cushing, Maine. Wyeth often noted: "I paint my life." One of the best-known images in 20th-century American art is his painting Christina's World, currently in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. This tempera was painted in 1948, when Wyeth was 31 years old. This book shows how the themes of the painting have been woven into the artist's own life and how his art has universalized them to reach directly to the reader's heart. Here is the real Christina Olson, the last of a branch of a Main coast seafaring family and a lifetime friend and neighbor of Andrew Wyeth. Through a collection of personal photographs, we see her as both child and adult, her house, and the objects that surround her. In passages quoted from her letters, we hear her own voice. And through the work of Andrew Wyeth, we are able to enter complete her world of sea and pasture, to experience the slow unfolding of time and to share in her abiding friendship with the Wyeths. In this volume, the focus is on Christina herself. With an elegantly controlled text accompanying a brilliant selection of 105 pre-studies, 128 four-color illustrations and 28 photographs, Betsy Wyeth has created a portrait of a very singular woman and of a world that is as haunting as the painting itself. Here, spread out before, you, is a life transmuted into art.
