Reading for Results features selections that sharpen students' reading skills and encourage them to become careful and committed readers. In addition to getting vocabulary pointers and using SQ3R, students learn how to find main ideas, locate supporting details, draw appropriate inferences, recognize patterns of development, understand visual aids, and read more critically.

After receiving her B.S. at Southern Connecticut State University, where she was certified as a teacher of secondary reading, Laraine Flemming went on to earn an M.A. in English literature at Boston College and a Ph.D. in American literature at the State University of New York in Buffalo. During her career, Flemming has taught students from elementary to graduate school covering subjects as varied as reading and writing, American literature, time management, speed reading, and study skills. She began writing textbooks while working as Director of the Reading and Writing Center at Dean Junior College. In need of a reading textbook that had lots of exercises combined with genuinely thought-provoking readings, Flemming decided to write her own. "I have used Reading for Results for many years. For me, its greatest strengths are what it covers and the exercises offered in every chapter. . .Although I have tried other texts I always return to Reading for Results."
"I have used Reading for Results for at least 8 years, several editions. I selected it because of ample practice of skills, helpful attention to details that other books don't cover. . .I also like the multicultural and historical readings. Flemming seems to have a strong sense of ethics and global development in the reading content used. . .[The text] has engaged students and given them a sense of growth and I have liked seeing that for my students."
