Kindergarten-Grade 2 A common theme in a humorous story. A little bear, Small, does not want to go to bed. The reluctant Small exasperates Biga grandmotherly bear with whom Small liveswith bedtime avoidance tactics ranging from being too thirsty and his pajamas too scratchy to his room not being the proper shade of dark. But patience is a virtue with Big as she snuggles with Small by the fireplace to settle down for the nightbut only one of them falls asleep. Stoddard's story is somewhat stifled by sporadic attempts to use rhyming verse among the prose, causing choppy phrasing and a broken story line. But Munsinger's amusing yet comforting illustrations keep the story rolling along, and the characters are quite expressive and endearing.
