Grade 5-8-- A friendship which began 25 years ago between an author and a Yup'ik Eskimo woman led to this book, which shows how the village of Scammon Bay, Alaska, has changed over the past 50 years, and how one family has adapted to those changes. Through many black-and-white photos and a text that developed from tape-recorded conversations, Jenness relates how the lives of Alice Rivers and her family have been influenced by government intervention and modern technology. Also emphasized are the many traditional practices that still remain, including hunting, family customs, and language. Although the placement of photos relates to the text on the page, it is unfortunate that there are no identifying captions, especially in the earlier chapters when Alice and her mother are reminiscing. There is also no indication as to the year some of the events occurred. There is some awkwardness in the text at times, but this is not a major problem. It is clear that this is the account of just one family in Alaska, but the book will help to dispel some of the stereotypes children still hold about Arctic peoples. While Bryan and Cherry Alexander's An Eskimo Family (Lerner, 1985) covers some of the same information, that family lives in Greenland and there are many differences. The text also lacks the personal involvement of In Two Worlds.
