Reviews

A popular alternative for gardeners lacking land is to grow plants in pots and boxes. Lightweight artificial soils and soluble fertilizers now make this practice easier. Wilson, who hosted Victory Garden South on PBS, covers this subject well. Topics discussed include selecting and making containers; using container plants in landscapes and limited spaces; making artificial soils; and caring for the special needs of plants grown in confined spaces. He describes his favorite choices for container gardening and includes flowers, vegetables, herbs, vines, cacti, and trees. A number of regional recommendations are given by horticulturists around the country. This book is similar in scope to Samuel Beckett's The Contained Garden ( LJ 3/1/83). Libraries needing another book on this subject should purchase.
