When Blanket is hung on the clothesline overnight to dry, the rest of the clothes, the dog, the cat, and the wind work together to get it safely inside to its owner.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 2-- The blanket of the title is the security object of a preschooler whose mother finds it necessary to wash it and leave it on the line overnight to dry. The child, of course, has trouble sleeping without it and feels sorry for it hanging outside, dripping with tearlike water. The family pets, the wind, and the other laundry items conspire to blow and tug the blanket back into the bedroom, where the mother is surprised in the morning to find it back in the bed. This sparse story line is filled out with pictures of nighttime rumpussing and carrying on in the dark, and is reminiscent of Sendak's Wild Things in its final wordless spread, in the depth of the pencil-hatchwork shadows and pale washes of color, and in the stocky rotundity of the youngster. As any child who has ever been separated from a security blanket knows, foiling the parent who insists on the separation is the best joke of all. The nighttime eeriness, combined with the antics of the pets, child, and laundry to outsmart the mother will satisfy young listeners and beginning readers. --Ruth K. From Publishers Weekly:

Apple, who illustrated Sheep in a Jeep and Sheep on a Ship , has created a playful story of a child whose Blanket remains on the clothesline at bedtime, not yet dry. The child is as desolate as Blanket, who sags and droops on the line, drops of water falling from its corners. But the shirts, pants and socks also hanging on the line come to Blanket's rescue. With help from the wind, the dog and the cat, the clothes manage to free Blanket and deliver it into the child's hands. Joined by two raccoons, a skunk and the child's stuffed animals, all celebrate with a merry dance in the moonlight before the child climbs into bed with the dog, cat and, of course, Blanket. Apple's use of shadow and light give her pictures a dreamlike quality, making this a lovely bedtime book. Ages 2-8.
