About the Author:

James Cross Giblin is the author of more than 20 critically acclaimed books for young people. His most recent book for Clarion, The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler, received the Robert F. Sibert Award for Informational Books. Mr. Giblin lives in New York City.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Kittens Ida and Betty have discovered a wonderful secret. A robin has laid four perfect blue eggs in her nest in a nearby tree. Each day they climb the leafy boughs to watch for the hatching. When a new kitten, Lucinda, moves into the neighborhood, she draws Betty away. Feeling betrayed by her fickle friend, Ida mopes about. Finally, Lucinda tires of the younger playmate, and the two little kittens are close companions once again. Best of all, the secret eggs are transformed into four chirping hatchlings. The typical trials that children's friendships suffer when older newcomers enter the picture are woven throughout. Older preschoolers will love the comeuppance bossy Lucinda receives at the story's end. Readers must forget the usual relationship between cats and birds; adults may be amused by the contradiction. The lively text is lengthier than usual--a consideration for younger listeners. However, like Chorao's other stories, this one has realistic situations that many children readily appreciate. The soft, detailed illustrations in watercolor, colored pencil, and ink carry the story well, and the characters' faces are filled with expression and appeal. --Virginia E.
