James Cross Giblin is the author of more than 20 critically acclaimed books for young people. His most recent book for Clarion, The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler, received the Robert F. Sibert Award for Informational Books. Mr. Giblin lives in New York City. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1-- A slight story of three people (mother, child, and baby) packing a picnic lunch, finally getting it into the car, and then . . . the rain starts. There are small mishaps, spills, and obstacles of everyday family life along the way ("Spilled the grape/ and had a purple/baby brother/ till Mother washed him/in the sink"). Some of Hines's more successful books deal with common, but often very intense, emotions that families experience, such as Grandma Gets Grumpy (Clarion, 1988). Here, however, there is a lack of any real underlying emotion or conflict. The language (strongly rhythmic but only occasionally rhyming) does not have any outstanding style or playfulness. The full-color illustrations are well laid out, and the depiction of objects is good, but Hines does not portray humans well at all. Her people appear awkward and unfinished, lending the whole the look of a draft. Better picnic stories are Robert Welber's Winter Picnic (Pantheon, 1970) and Emily Arnold McCully's Picnic (HarperCollins, 1984). --Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
