PreSchool-- Dunbar explores color recognition and forming associations between colors and pieces of fruit in this bland picture book. A mother is grocery shopping with her baby and preschooler. The baby tosses the shopping list out of the cart, and as mom searches for it, the preschooler asks in turn for a purple pear, a pink plum, a blue banana, etc. He eventually gets his colors straight and locates the list too. Unfortunately, the fruit colors aren't true. They are executed in pale watercolors and have a washed-out appearance. None are the strong primary colors that preschoolers can readily recognize--the red apples appear orangish; the oranges are yellowish-brown, etc. Stephen Oliver's My First Look at Colors (McKay, 1990) provides appropriate objects for easy recognition (distinct in form and color), and features aesthetically pleasing patterns and category identification. Finally, the food the baby throws on the floor and the knocked-over grocery displays, which the mother accepts with indifferent tolerance, create an impression that's far from cute. --Liza Bliss, formerly at Leominster Public Library, MA
