From School Library Journal:

Grade 1-3-- Joey King enters first grade full of good cheer, even though he can't get down his breakfast and his third-grade brother makes him feel small. He discovers a teacher whom he loves and many different kinds of classmates, among them Madeline, who has trouble seeing, and Ronald, a bully who makes fun of Madeline's thick glasses and Joey's last name. Joey learns a lot: that knowing how to read doesn't happen in the first week; that people are not always what they seem; and that bravery is a noble but complicated art. Readers are drawn into the third-person narrative about an earnest boy who tries to do his best, and worries about many things. As time goes by, his self-confidence grows with support from loving and wise adults, new friends, and even (surprisingly enough) his brother. Everything that happens is real; most children will know these people, feel for them, and hope for the best. --Carolyn Jenks, formerly at Oyster River Elementary School, Durham, NH

From Publishers Weekly:

Reminiscent of the classic Ramona series, this tale chronicles the joys and struggles of early school experiences. Joey King can hardly wait to start first grade, where he will learn how to read and have real homework, just like his older brother. Joey loves his teacher Mrs. Fulks, but the class bully taunts him daily. Suddenly school is not what the boy had expected--"Everything was different in first grade. They didn't have any morning snack and no playtime. Ronald Boyd kept poking Joey in the back and calling him King and King Kong. Thinking about it made Joey's stomach hurt." A perceptive substitute teacher helps him find a solution and ultimately adjust to his first encounter with academia. An ideal read-aloud for first-graders, this humorous, thoughtfully written account conveys the anticipation and anxiety children experience when they begin school. Readers will easily identify with Joey and find his story both reassuring and entertaining. Ages 5-8.
