From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Universal experiences are captured in these 76 poems, which can be shared with young children and enjoyed independently by beginning readers. Many familiar (and mostly contemporary) names can be found among the 40 poets featured. The book is divided into 12 thematic parts. Subjects range from bugs to food, friends to being snug in bed at night. The poems share the feeling of what it's like when a pet dies or when you are lost, and explore the wonders of the imagination. A variety of styles are represented, but there is a definite emphasis on rhythms that are a pleasure to read aloud. The illustrations are sketched in soft pencil and watercolor mostly in earth tones and warm hues. They vary from realistic, cheerful children and plump, soft cats to fanciful scenes of dancing silverware and animated flowers. Poems may be set amid a large, double-page picture or surrounded by smaller images, but the pages remain uncluttered and pleasing and are often suffused with the sunlight implied by the title. Sunflakes is not as long, has more frequent serious moments, and is not so dependent on sing-song rhythm as Prelutsky's Read-Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young (Knopf, 1986). It is also more focused and less cutesy in appearance than Hopkins's Side By Side (S. & S., 1988). There is little overlap with either of these collections. Many of the poems can be found in other anthologies, but their juxtaposition here is delightful. --Annette Curtis Klause, Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries, MD
