The sun goes down, the moon comes up, and the carousel moves slower and slower. The animals push and shove, but they can't get it turning again. Then a giant lifts the carousel high in the air, and disaster seems certain. Surprise! Music rises, the "giant" goes back to bed, and the carousel animals again circle happily round and round. Sprightly rhyme, finely painted illustrations, and a surprise ending make this a perfect bedtime story for very young children.

PreS?A sweet bedtime tale with simple rhyming language to soothe preschoolers at day's end. It is nightfall and the beribboned carousel animals slowly chase one another around in step to the lovely music. Then, as the melody and motion begin to slow down, lion and horse, pig and swan step down from their poles to try to nudge the platform forward to continue their game. It will not move. Suddenly a sound startles them and they rush back to their places, for the giant is coming. The frightened animals cling tightly to their perches as the music-box carousel soars into the air in the hands of a tow-headed toddler. He winds his toy; the music begins. The animals happily resume their game as the tired child drifts off to sleep. The rich watercolor images of the handsome animals set against the starry sky are a delight to the eye. The clever ending, contrasting the toy with the child, is a surprise that is sure to please. Young children will enjoy thinking of themselves as powerful giants able to control a smaller world?a helpful bedtime image when they may feel most vulnerable.
