When Daniel awakens in an alien world caught up in a bitter civil war, he is forced to choose sides. Befriended by strange and powerful animals with whom he can mindspeak, Daniel and his small band of animal allies travel through this world having to depend on their own wits -- and luck -- to survive.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 4-8-- On his way home from school in a raging snowstorm, Daniel, 13, is knocked unconscious by a strange, Z-shaped bolt of lightning. When he awakens, it is in an unfamiliar world filled with strange animals and in the midst of a civil war. Daniel discovers he is an Empath who can communicate mentally with the creatures, a skill that saves his life on several occasions. Leaders of the factions try to convince him of the rightness of their causes. Of course, he makes the right choice, and, with the aid of the samkits, a race of intelligent cats, helps his side to triumph. Wounded in battle, Daniel loses consciousness again and comes to in his own world, where he finally finds his way home. Although there is no great depth of characterization, the story is well paced, with some nice touches of humor. Since it is shorter than most books of this genre, it also may appeal to junior high reluctant readers. --Li Stark, North Castle Public Library, Armonk, NY

From Publishers Weekly:

Levy's first novel centers on Daniel Taylor, who is ripped from the world he knows and catapulted to Lithia, a beautiful but war-torn realm. There, not only can the youth communicate with animals telepathically, but he soon becomes embroiled in a fierce conflict beween two claimants to the throne. Through judicious use of his talent and increasing self-reliance, Daniel is able to help end the strife and fulfill the mysterious quest for which he was originally sent to Lithia. The neatly characterized animals Daniel befriends along the way (who become his own private army) offer diverting comic relief--especially in the case of Me, a small poisonous snake who is terrified of being stepped on. A well-founded fantasy with abundant action. Ages 10-14.
