Ages 4^-8. Cartoons in ink, watercolor, and colored pencil express the exuberance of a famous conductor who waves his baton and leads the orchestra: "He waved it wildly, and the trumpets blared. He waved it gently, and the violins sighed." He's applauded and celebrated, and he loves it. Then he loses his baton, and he falls apart. He cancels his next concert and refuses to go on his world tour. Finally, he realizes that his music comes, not from the baton, but from within, and he conducts by waving his hands. Kids will enjoy the lighthearted treatment of a celebrity and the lyrical view of the music he makes. Hazel Rochman
