With its vivid color plates and detailed illustrations, Secrets of the Nest is an insightful look into the mysteries of birds' nesting habits. From the two-ton nest of an eagle to the tiny knot-like nest of a hummingbird, Dunning examines the diverse habitats and sizes of birds' nests. This is an inviting book that peeks inside a remarkable natural place and shows both the evolution of birds and the methods they use to nurture and protect their eggs.

Joan Dunning has written and illustrated several books for adults about natural history. This is her first book for children. Ms. Dunning resides in Arcata, California, with her family. From Booklist:
The distinctiveness of this book is the result of Dunning's ability to identify with her avian subjects and her talent for creating pictures. She not only draws--she writes with her eyes, moving in like a zoom lens on individual birds so engrossed in their nesting activity they are unaware of the observer. Dunning captures such images as a murrelet, alone on a barren cliff, placidly watching a predator gull that passes up the easy meal; a male Harris hawk passing kill to another, which carries it to a nesting female; and a fledgling egret dangling upside down from a nest holding larger chicks. Vivid portraits in short, sure strokes characterize bird families by nest types--bare ground to cushy hammocks--nesting behavior, avian evolution, and environmental history. Each section is illustrated with lovely pen-and-ink drawings as sensitive to detail as Dunning's prose. A delightful celebration of spring. Virginia Dwyer
