9780395720387: Cat and Cat-Face

Despite their differences, an impulsive cat and a quiet flower become friends. The cat-face flower can't stand the late-night feline concerts that Cat enjoys, while Cat can't understand why Cat-Face goes to bed early. Cat and Cat-Face conveys a very important truth about friendship.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2?A misunderstanding between a flower and a house cat is the premise behind this thin, silly story. An unnamed woman and her husband ponder the fate of their new house plant, a pansy, whose name translates from the Chinese as "Cat-face." The couple hides the plant in a box so their cat will not damage it. When flower and feline finally meet, both are disappointed in each other but come to appreciate one another's gifts: Cat-face can recite poetry, and Cat purrs. The delicate colored-pencil illustrations do little to add life to this ridiculous tale. Neither character seems alive, despite some interesting perspectives and nice use of shadows and light. Much of the dialogue is stilted ("I made up a poem for you, dear Cat"), and the prose is awkward. At one point, another cat in the neighborhood is abruptly introduced and just as suddenly vanishes after one encounter with the unresponsive flower. Leslie Baker's Third Story Cat (Little, 1990) has a more believable feline, and Mary Calhoun's Hot-Air Henry (1981) and High-Wire Henry (1991, both Morrow) have pizzazz. Sun's is one cat story to keep in the bag.?Ellen M. Riordan, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore, MD

From Publishers Weekly:

With grudging acceptance of their differences, a cat and a pansy (known as "Cat-face" in Chinese) forge a friendship. At first meeting, Cat presumes the petals poking out of a box are the tips of another cat's ears; from inside the box, the pansy imagines Cat's voice to be that of a fellow flower. On discovering the truth, the two ignore each other's idiosyncrasies and decide to be friends. Inevitably, Cat-face is subjected to the horrific music of Cat's night buddies; and the nocturnal feline finds he cannot keep the pansy's early-morning hours. But suddenly they realize that it is okay to be sometimes together and sometimes apart. Inconsistencies in the plot fog this worthy message-Wild King's music is "the most awful noise," yet the pansy falls asleep; Cat's affection for the pansy contradicts his previous reputation as a plant-destroyer. The chief incongruity might appear to be the premise, but thanks to Liu's (The Mouse Bride) dreamlike illustrations, Cat and Cat-face resemble each other just enough to make their affinity seem possible. Ages 5-8.
