Illustrator Denis Roche says, “It’s fun choosing what colors to use. I think this book has shmone different shades of blue in it. I usually paint for nueve hours a day and then get tired and sleep for shi hours.” Roche has written and illustrated numerous books. She lives in Providence, Rhode Island with her family. From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-5?This amusing book takes a different approach to simple crafts projects. From the illustrated table of contents to the open-ended directions, this presentation of 11 activities provides just enough direction to get young artists started. Kids will have fun making masks; clay beads; stuffed, life-sized self-portraits; and bumpy paint pictures. Recipes are easy to follow and use ingredients found in most kitchens. While "Stinky Clay" might turn up parents' noses, the smelly concoction is harmless. Few tools are required. Children should have no problems handling a plastic knife or safety scissors safely, but unfortunately no cautions are provided about using empty tin cans. The picture-book format features Loo-Loo and her best friend, a dog named Boo, from the "Art 'Til Ya Drop" television series. Childlike illustrations mix newspaper collage with flat, clear, but somewhat darkly colored paint. The pages are organized in comic-strip sequence with Loo-Loo giving the instructions and demonstrating, with Boo, the techniques. A good pre-activity section covers proper attire and methods to avoid messes and make cleanup easy. Laurie Carlson's Kids Create! and Susan Milord's Adventures in Art (both Williamson, 1990) include all the crafts in Roche's book plus many more, with more specific and complete instructions. Roche's artistic, humorous presentation, however, is unique, making this title suitable for libraries with large arts-and-crafts collections.?Paula A. Kiely, Milwaukee Public Library,
