Ollie hides from his mother, slipping behind chairs, under a table, between two pillows, and then onto his mother's lap. This board book teaches prepositions while telling a warm story of a mother and son playing hide and seek.

About the Author:

Illustrator Denis Roche says, "It's fun choosing what colors to use. I think this book has shmone different shades of blue in it. I usually paint for nueve hours a day and then get tired and sleep for shi hours." Roche has written and illustrated numerous books. She lives in Providence, Rhode Island with her family.

From School Library Journal:

PreS. Two board books starring canine Ollie and his family meet with limited success. In the first title, the young pup hides from his mother as they make their way through the living room, "behind a chair/in front of the curtains/up on a shelf." Despite his obvious hiding places, the mother fails to find her son until he is finally on her lap, lovingly wrapped in her arms. In the second book, Ollie travels through the house, this time counting sofas, steps, socks, and other household items until finally he counts 10 brothers and sisters and "only ONE Ollie." These simple, reassuring concept books make use of short descriptive phrases and simple flat illustrations in burnt primary and secondary colors. Roche's figures have a simple, expressive charm as does his setting in the first title. The layout and design, however, are potentially confusing. Between the first and last double-page spreads, the illustrations are single-paged juxtaposed images that will be "read" as one picture, e.g., toddlers will see two Ollies hiding from two mothers. Small and sometimes unclear objects may also bewilder children as they count along with Ollie. The eight lamps are difficult to distinguish because of their stacked arrangement, while nine orange flowers are too small to count easily.?Paula A. Kiely, Milwaukee Public Library, WI
