Synopsis

The cheerful, busy family that prepared the delectable meal in "Feast for 10" now gets ready for Christmas. A simple counting format frames all the festivities, from one star at the top of the Christmas tree to ten hands stringing popcorn, then counting once again from one wreath to ten folks wishing peace for all. There's a special job for everyone: Grandmother reads a story, Mom bakes and her children taste, Dad and Sister wrap baskets for the needy, and everyone, even the littlest, joins together to sing carols. Inviting, cleverly patterned cut-paper illustrations complement simple rhymes as this special family make the preparations part of their Christmas celebration.

Reviews

PreSchool-K?The African-American family from Falwell's Feast for 10 (Clarion, 1993) returns in this seasonal counting book. From "1 star for the top of the Christmas tree" to "10 hands string the popcorn chains," the children and adults join together to prepare for the celebration. They then repeat the numbers from "1 wreath welcomes guests to the door" to "10 joyful folks wish peace for all." The artwork, done in bright cut-paper and fabric collages accented with watercolor, is engaging and interesting, with plenty of details for curious youngsters to explore. A definite addition to Christmas shopping lists.?LF

Ages 2^-5. With cut-paper and fabric collages in bright Christmas colors, Falwell's rhyming Christmas counting book shows an extended African American family preparing for Christmas together. With Mom and Dad, the children decorate the tree, and they place 1 star at the top; later 5 snuggle up to hear Grandma read 6 stories; then 10 hands string the popcorn chains. But it's not over: a guest arrives, and there's another round, from 1 wreath on the door through 10 joyful folks wishing peace for all. A cheerful way for children to learn to count while they have fun with the holiday traditions and join the celebration. Hazel Rochman
