A reference book for anyone wishing to understand the factors governing the performance of a sailing boat. Examined here are the fundamental factors governing a hull's behaviour, the principles underlying aero- and hydrodynamics, the performance and efficiency of aerofoils and hydrofoils, and an in-depth study of the behaviour of sails. The appendices take an in-depth look at high speed sailing and examine developments in hull appendages.A new appendix in this edition presents a simple graphic method of predicting a yacht's behaviour in a variety of wind and wave conditions which will add to our knowledge of how important such factors as sail camber, stability and the reduction of hull resistance are to a yacht's speed performance. Professor Marchaj is also the author of "Sail Performance" and "Seaworthiness, the Forgotten Factor".

The international classic work of reference for anyone wishing to understand the factors governing the performance of a sailing boat. A new Appendix in this Third Edition presents a simple graphic method for predicting a yacht's behavior.About the Author:
Tony Marchaj's expertise in wind tunnel and test tank research, combined with his practical sailing experience, make him uniquely qualified to write this book. Previously a research fellow in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Southampton University, he is now an independent aerodynamics consultant whose ability and advice are sought throughout the world. Each of his previous books - Sailing Theory and Practice and Seaworthiness, the Forgotten Factor - have become classic reference works. His technical paper on "Design for Extreme Conditions" was awarded the coveted Silver Medal by the Royal Institute of Naval Architects, of which he is a member. Marchaj's love of sailing began in his native Poland, where he was a national Finn champion. That love has continued through involvement in many different research projects, ranging from 12-meter rig design to third world fishing fleets. He now lives permanently at his rural retreat in France.
