PreSchool-Grade 1 Even libraries that have many ABC books in their collections shouldn't overlook this one, which is a delight from A to Z . Children will love the bold, colorful pages and the broad humor, while teachers and parents will appreciate how well the book performs as an introduction to the alphabet. So many ABC books merely platform the artist's expertise and become too complex to serve as more than a visual tour-de-force. This book, however, presents the letters of the alphabet in a clear, simple way without sacrificing visual appeal. Gardner presents one letter per page, each printed in upper and lower case letters, followed by an illustration to match the letter and a simple phrase at the bottom. The question asked in the title, Have You Ever Seen. . .? , is answered by phrases such as ``a Monster wearing Mittens,'' ``a Nose like a Noodle,'' ``a Vampire playing a Violin'' and so on. Each page uses a bright color as a full-page background, highlighted with a simple graphic of the object with a cut-paper look. There is no distracting detail or clutter but enough clever touches to add humor and a touch of whimsy. Not many ABC books can surpass this one.Barbara McGinn, Oak Hill School Media Center, Severna Park, Md.
