Herbal medicine enthusiast Gardner offers remedies to many of the maladies associated with pregnancy and childbirth. While the herbs she suggests can be helpful, such recommendations as regulating the menstrual cycle to coincide with lunar phases seems somewhat ludicrous. Of limited value. Birth Without Surgery laments the rise in the cesarean birth rate and presents steps to reverse it. Unfortunately, Jones suggests that a mother is less of a woman if she does not give birth vaginally and that she may be at fault if a cesarean is performed. While vaginal birth is the preferred mode of entry into the world, creating guilt and anxiety in those who give birth surgically is unjustified. A better source on cesareans is Nancy Cohen's Silent Knife (LJ 3/1/83).Robert Schmid, L.R.C. of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical Sch.
