Kindergarten-Grade 3Like DeSantis and Agre's A Doctor's Tools (Dodd, 1985), this is an other winner. Black-and-white photos show dental instruments being used on a variety of small multi-racial patients, none of whom appear pained or appre hensive. Each instrument is also shown alone in a close-up. The photographs complement the text beautifully: they are clear and nicely composed. The ac companying text, with important words and the names of the instruments in boldface, explains how each item is used, as well as the sounds and the sen sations of the procedure. There is a strong emphasis on proper dental hy giene. Organization is excellent: the in formation is divided into three catego riesthe checkup, preventitive care, and repairing a tooth. A table of con tents is included, listing each instru ment in the appropriate division. An ex cellent tool for allaying fears as well as explaining what happens at the dentist, this should be a part of every collec tion. It covers current dental proce dures more thoroughly than any other book available, and in a manner both understandable and appealing.
