John Dolittle takes his circus to London, where with the help of the canary Pippinella he stages a bird opera.

About the Author
Hugh Lofting was born in Maidenhead in 1886. As a child he kept a miniature zoo and wildlife museum in his mother's linen cupboard and enjoyed making up stories for his family. He later studied engineering in London and the United States, and visited Canada, Africa and the West Indies. After his marriage in 1912 he settled in the United States. Hugh Lofting fought in the trenches during World War I and it was whilst observing the lack of compassion shown to the horses on the battlefields that the idea for Doctor Dolittle was born. He was the main character in letters Hugh sent home from the front to entertain his children. The successful publication of The Story of Doctor Dolittle in 1920 was followed by a further eleven books. In 1923 Hugh Lofting was awarded the Newbery Medal. He died in 1947.

Color pictorial end papers, with small white scuffs where the end papers were stuck to the paste downs along the bottom edge (4 places in front, 3 places in back). Full color frontispiece. Pages clean and unmarked. Lippincott hard cover, missing dust jacket, 1926 edition, 11th printing, 342 pages, illustrated by the author. 8vo (8.25" x 5.5") 6th entry in Dr. Dolittle series, preceded by Doctor Dolittle's Zoo, and followed by Doctor Dolittle's Garden. The novel disrupts the chronological order of the series, with events occurring between Doctor Dolittle's Circus and The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle despite the book's publication between Doctor Dolittle's Zoo and Doctor Dolittle's Garden. This book is the follow-up to Doctor Dolittle's Circus, for the Doctor (at this point in time) is still operating the circus he inherited from the runaway former owner, Albert Blossom. In this novel, Doctor Dolittle creates a Canary Opera based on the life of, and starring, the canary Pippinella.
