Vicki Cobb, a New York City native, received her bachelor's degree in zoology from Barnard College and her master's degree in secondary science education from Columbia University. She has written many science-related books for young readers, and was the creator and host of "The Science Game," a television show. Ms. Cobb lives in Mamaroneck, New York, with her two sons.
Grade 3-7-Each of the 30 tricks/experiments in this revised edition (1976) begins with a list of easy-to-find materials and is followed by a description of the set up. Cobb has added a section called "What's Really Happening," in which she clearly explains the scientific principles behind the demonstrations. She emphasizes proper cautions when using fire or poisonous substances. Kalish's pen-and-ink illustrations are simple, but attractive and detailed enough to enhance the text. Performance tips enable young magicians to select just the right activities for their acts. The text has also been rearranged, reworded, and modernized. The same basic experiments are still included, but the "Chemical Indicator" has been clarified. A sound purchase for school and public libraries, particularly those in which the earlier edition is popular.
