An imaginary journey over the next hill, beyond the mountains, and out to the stars demonstrates the infinity of the universe

PreSchool-Grade 2 Originally published in Germany, this simple story tells of an imaginary trip that a young boy and girl take when asking "What is beyond the hill? Does the world stop there?" Each repetitive answer of "Beyond that there is. . ." builds from the specific (the hill seen from their backyard) to the constantly expanding world beyond (hills, mountains, stars) until it ends with "And the stars go on forever." The exceptional quality of the lovely, muted full-page color illustrations create not only a mood of wonderment but also a genuine sense of awe, opening to children the prospect of what is beyond their immediate and known world. Children will love to guess what will appear when they turn each page. Similar in mood and tone to Shulevitz' Dawn (1974) and Rain Rain Rivers (1969, both Farrar), this large-size book invites use in storytelling groups and classrooms. Also, the quiet sense of marvel at our universe inspired by this book makes it an outstanding one for parent and child to share. Louise M. Zuckerman, formerly at San Francisco Public Library
