Grade 1-5 Bauer's first two collections of poems and stories related to weather concern rain ( Rainy Day ) and snow ( Snowy Day both Lippincott, 1986), and readers familiar with those will welcome Windy Day. Twenty-nine poems, three stories, two fact pages, and a page of craft ideas pretty much cover the subject. Most of the poems have been published elsewhere, but many are now out-of-print, making this collection even more appealing. Familiar children's poets such as Jack Prelutsky, Lilian Moore, and Felice Holman are included, as well as poets such as William Carlos Williams, usually only accessible via adult poetry collections. The stories include a Chinese folk tale, an original tale by Christian Garrison, and a rollicking story by Ruth Park. Dick Zimmer's black-and-white drawings have depth, detail, and humor and add much to the collection. This book will make a great read-aloud and will also be appreciated by elementary school science teachers looking for supplementary material. Also noteworthy is a short bibliography of fiction about wind. Barbara S. McGinn, Oak Hill Elementary School, Severna Park, Md .
