Grade 7-10-- While Kaplow's latest YA novel lacks the insight, imagination, and outright hilarity of his earlier Alex Icicle (Houghton, 1984), Alessandra in Love is a pleasant, fast-paced story about first love and all of the attendant elations, insecurities, and ultimate disillusions. When Alessandra falls in love with Wyn, a talented musician, they enjoy being together but seem to have very little in common. The relationship is plagued from the beginning by Alessandra's jealousy of Wyn's former girlfriend, Debbie, and when Wyn and Alessandra have the opportunity to spend two days--and nights--alone in New York, Debbie makes a complicating and unwelcome appearance. While the story does have its amusing moments, neither Wyn nor Alessandra comes off as particularly likable characters. Both are self-centered and fairly one dimensional. Wyn's only interests are himself and music, and Alessandra's only interests are herself and Wyn. It's not too easy to identify with these two. But the plot is a tight one, the situations believable, and Alessandra's best friend Melissa is delightful. All in all, a credible offering in the sometimes overwhelming sea of teen romances. --Trish Ebbatson, Delaware County District Library, Ohio
