Grade 4-6 An updated version of Simon's Science at Work: Projects in Oceanography (Watts, 1972; o.p.). The black-and-white drawings are by a different artist but similar, and the clearly-written instructions have been expanded and updated. The experiments are good ones, such as discovering the minerals in sea water and how it differs from salt water made from tap water and table salt; comparing the freezing point of fresh and sea water, and thereby learning why salt is sprinkled on icy roads. Simon also describes setting up and stocking a salt water aquarium as well as experiments to conduct by the shore and from a small boat. Organization is excellent. Each experiment is divided into three sections: the purpose of the experiment, the materials needed, and how to do it. The index will lead young scientists and librarians to specific experiments, especially during science fair season when many copies of this book will be useful. Frances E.
