An introduction to the history, geography, economy, culture, and people of Zimbabwe

Grade 7-12-- A fairly even account of Zimbabwe's struggle to regain its independence. Extensive coverage of the history and political struggles of the country from prehistory to the present outlines the hardships endured by both black and white citizens. Detailed but not overburdened with facts, this is a straightforward account that has interesting incidents and information. There is also a chapter on literature and the arts with examples of poetry and song lyrics. Additional information and chronologies on topics mentioned in the main body of the book are boxed and inserted into the text; included here are personal memories of those involved in the country's history; profiles of famous personages; and information on socialism, Shona names, and witchcraft. This arrangement, however, interrupts the narrative flow; by the time readers return to the regular content, they may have forgotten what it was about. One mistake--the 40 members of the Senate are not appointed by the president. The black-and-white photographs and line drawings are a fair addition to the text. This book gives similar but more extensive information than Laure's Zimbabwe (Childrens, 1988), and the information appears to be by an insider rather than just a frequent visitor or researcher. --Kathryn Havris, Mesa Pub .
