About the Author

Douglas Reeman (Alexander Kent) did convoy duty in the Atlantic, the Arctic and the North Sea. He has written over thirty novels under his own name and more than twenty bestselling historical novels featuring Richard Bolitho under the pseudonym Alexander Kent.

From AudioFile

After the Revolutionary War, the British Admiralty sends Captain Richard Bolitho, of the Royal Navy, on a dodgy diplomatic voyage from Spithead to India via the Canary Islands. While watering off the western coast of Africa, a slave ship's crew, and later the would-be slaves, attack his ship, the HMS UNDINE, with cannons, cutlasses, and showers of rocks. The tenor-toned, nasal Michael Jayston has a unique manner of speech for each of the characters, even the drunken ones, and he spits out the nautical nomenclature like a seasoned salt. Alexander Kent's novel about late eighteenth-century sailing ships will both entertain and educate. Its rich vocabulary is especially suited to stimulate young adult minds. Hardcover. First Edition. Fine in a Very Good dustjacket. Bound in full black cloth. The spine is gilt-stamped. 'Frigate Undine' endpapers. 320pps. Stated First American Edition. An excellent copy: clean, tight, square, and bright. All tips are sharp. The text and the boards are immaculate; no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has touches of wear to the extremities; there are 3 closed tears and a couple of creases at the bottom of the rear panel. The original price is intact. "Spithead, 1784. His majesty's Frigate Undine sets sail for India and the seas beyond. Europe may be at peace-but in colonial waters the promises of statesmen count for little and the bloody struggle for supremacy still goes on. Richard Bolitho would have cause to remember his admirals words: 'The task I am giving you would be better handled by a squadron.'." Purchase with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile. Satisfaction guaranteed or all costs you've incurred will be promptly refunded.
