Reviews

Kindergarten-Grade 2 William, who appears to be eight or so, is ill enough to be confined to his room (alone all day), but well enough to be bored and lonely. A friendless newcomer to the city, he advertises his plight by putting a sign (``Sick of This'') in his window. A mysterious gift of paints and paper is left on the doorstep. Each day William paints the odd mailman that he sees: a duck, an alligator, a skunk, a fish, a caterpillarand is left a surprise: an egg, a tee-shirt, flowers, a shell, a cocoon. Finally the doctor pronounces him fit, the human mailman returns, and the presents stop. The text is weak and wordy, but dePaola's whimsical pale watercolors of the fantasy-mailmen are a delight. A housebound child might be encouraged by this book to seek relief from boredom in imagination. Parents, though, may wonder whether the excessively neat and uncomplaining William is really well after all. Patricia Dooley, formerly at Drexel Univ . , Philadelphia
