ea. vol: photogs. by Fiona Horne. unpaged. (Look and Talk Bks.). CIP. Putnam. 1986. PSm $5.95. PreS These four concept books, illustrated with color photographs, exercise preschoolers' developing concept skills of visual perception and problem solving. In Can You See It? , there is a close-up view of an object (roller-skates, hairbrush, etc.) on the left that is ``lost'' in the picture on the right. In What's the Difference? , children are to determine how the photograph on the left differs from its companion photograph on the right. This volume can also serve as an opposites concept book. These two titles seem to elicit concrete and limited responses, whereas What Can You Do? and Where Does It Go? utilize imagination and evoke multiple responses. Where Does It Go? shows an object on the left page, then reveals where it belongs or how it is used on the the opposite page. What Can You Do? . . . with an old tire, sofa pillows, orange peels, etc., has equal imagination-expanding use. Horne's bright color photographs serve their purpose effectively as the primary medium of context. Photographs are framed by a half-inch border: this technique eases their brightness, and differentiates action from one page to another. Appropriately, young children are the participants in each photograph, although older siblings and adults make sporadic appearances. These small books are ideal for young hands and child/adult lap-reading interaction. One could then progress to Tana Hoban's Look Again (Macmillan, 1971) and Is It Larger? Is It Smaller? (Greenwillow, 1985). Mary Beth Burgoyne, Mesa Public Library, Ariz.
