"Gauch's wry, understated humor is charming; Primavera's sturdily realistic pictures subtly deepen understanding of Christina's mixed emotions. A cheerful wholesome addition to the new-sibling shelf."--Kirkus Reviews, pointered review. Full color.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Christina Katerina will be familiar to readers of Gauch's earlier books about her as a creative and independent character. Here she is decidedly disturbed over the arrival of a new sibling. As her father wraps a present to take to the hospital, Christina gathers up her teddy bears to go on a journey. She sets out down the street, and after some small incidents she reaches a part of town she doesn't recognize. A storm threatens and breaks. Always confident, Christina marches on until familiar landmarks come into view. Then her father appears, running down the hill to hug her. The final scene has her smiling at her new baby sister and realizing that the "very best thing about going on a faraway journey was coming home." The journey and the storm provide good parallels for Christina's emotions, and Primavera's realistic watercolors capture the changing weather as well as Christina's changing moods. A book written with both skill and flair. --Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library
