PreSchool-K A young boy's stuffed dinosaurs become his gentle benefactors when they come alive and lead him on an adventurous journey. At bedtime Shane reluctantly tucks himself into bed, cuddling his cat and his collection of stuffed dinosaurs. During the night a friendly Apatosaurus peeks in the window and offers Shane a ride to the land of the dinosaurs. There Shane gleefully slips down his companion's tail, hops a ride on a Stegosaurus, and wanders happily with all his new dinosaur friends. Suddenly a Tyrannosaurus appears on the scene. The other dinosaurs flee, but a Triceratops rescues Shane and returns him safely to home and bed. This simple, wordless story exploits the current dinosaur craze, but does so with visual appeal and innocent charm. The stylized illustrations are colorful and possess a softness appropriate for the story's dream sequence. Preschoolers and kindergarteners will easily be able to follow and describe Shane's dreamy escapade. Koontz includes a chart to assist in the identification of the various dinosaurs, a boon for young dinosaur enthusiasts. Given their great numbers, this book should find a welcome home in many picture book collections. Gail C. Ross, Baltimore County Public Library

Wordlessly, Koontz shows how playtime extends into dreamtime when a boy goes to bed. Ensconced in a bed full of stuffed toy dinosaurs, a boy awakens and finds himself carried away by an apatosaurus to a prehistoric land where real beasts roam. He encounters friendly dinosaurs and some fearful moments, but a triceratops soon drops the boy off on his very own windowsill. The action is fluidly developed, giving this work a dimension that will appeal to readers and pre-readers alike. An index at the back identifies the 31 dinosaurs pictured in the book, demonstrating that the artist's buoyant watercolors are informative as well as fun. Ages 2-7.
