PreSchool-K-- A little goblin travels through the woods to his grandmother's house, taking suitable goblin gifts (thorns, bugs, weeds and the like). Along the way, he meets a succession of animals that frighten or are frightened by him. Like verses of a song, each meeting is a variant on the original encounter so that as he is "walking through the wood" carrying a different item, he performs a different action. He rounds a bend and sees, in turn, a mouse, a squirrel, a bird, a butterfly, and a bunny. His comforting grandmother loves his presents, bakes him cookies, walks him home, and "they never saw a thing" although all the "scary" creatures are pictured watching them. Degen's winged, green goblins are cuddly and furry. The wood is cozy with encircling branches. Preschoolers will be amused by the goblin's fear of such harmless animals and soon join in repeating the lines. They will delight in pointing out all the animals that remain unseen by the goblins on the last page. Unfortunately, the chance for page-turning suspense posed by, "what did he see?" is not taken advantage of in the book's design. Nevertheless, this offers a good choice for a monster story time along with Susan O'Keefe's One Hungry Monster (Joy St/Little, 1989) and Robert Crowe's Clyde Monster (Dutton, 1976). --Louise L. Taking treats to his grandmother (``bugs and thorns and peppercorns''), a little goblin has mutually terrifying encounters with a bunny, a mouse, a butterfly, etc. Johnston makes the most of this familiar scenario in an artfully cadenced text with classic repetitions, nicely rounded in a cozy conclusion: ``Greeny'' and her grandson make cookies together.
