Gr 3 Up--In this intimate look into the heart and mind of author/illustrator Patricia Polacco, viewers are made to feel welcome in her home and studio as she speaks directly to them about her childhood. The title is appropriate as Polacco talks about dreams and dream-like states. She says that "a book is a dream." Much of the first half of the presentation deals with her maternal grandmother and the stories Polacco heard as a child. Viewers who are familiar with her books will recognize many of the plots which the author describes as coming from her grandmother or her own experiences. She relates her frustrations with dyslexia until a teacher diagnosed the problem and gave her the support she needed. The rest of the video takes place in Polacco's studio. While she is speaking, describing her illustrating craft, viewers are able to look over her shoulder at the illustrations she is working on. The camera zooms in for closeups and shows details of the double-page spread she is completing. Throughout the presentation, pages from her books are shown, softly dissolving from one to another. This heart-warming video can be used in a variety of ways from elementary through high school. Teachers and librarians can use it for author study, reading or writing motivation, or to demonstrate illustration techniques. It will enrich all collections.
