The four-horned Hebridean sheep and the tiny Exmoor ponies are two of the odd and unusual animals presented in a book about creatures that have not evolved from their primitive states and yet live in the modern world today.

Grade 4 Up?A collection of poems and paintings that capture the beauty and power of 13 ancient animal breeds. As in Bird Watch (1990; o.p.) and Sea Watch (1996, both Philomel), Yolen and Lewin have combined words and pictures to create a celebration of the essence of each poem's subject. Whether portraying powerful draft horses ("Great-footed,/feather-footed,/iron-shod/gentle giants...You tower over/those dawn horses/from whom all horses come") or cattle dating from the time of the Irish hero Cuchullain ("Where is he now, that brown bull?/Dead of a broken heart,/Dead with a heart of black stone blood,/While the white cows still graze/Lonely in the green parks,/Quiet in the green parks,/Unstolen in the green parks,/Dreaming of the glory days"), Yolen's words and Lewin's brushstrokes draw readers into the mysterious heart of each animal. The Originals is an original hymn to our past that lives on in these glorious creatures?as Yolen writes of the Exmoor pony, "This could be today?/Or a thousand years past."?Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School, CT

Gr. 3^-6. Strong poetry and astonishingly beautiful paintings celebrate animals across the world that have hardly changed through time. There's the gorgeously preening red jungle fowl, the huge Tamworth pig, the wild Exmoor pony, the dark-faced Churro sheep; some of them still living in the "stone-sown deserts," the meadows, mountains, and moors of their very first homes. Lewin's dramatic paintings almost overwhelm the words at times, but children--on their own and in science and poetry classes--will be fascinated by the stories of evolutionary roots and endurance ("history written strong / in bone and skin / in hoof and horn"). A page of notes at the back extends what the poems say about each animal's origins and descendants. Hazel Rochman
