Saturday is Jack Cat's favorite day of the week. But what is he to do when it rains and he can't go out to play with his friends? Paint a new friend, that's what! Meet Happy Dog. Together, these two use their imaginations to fly to outer space, captain a fire engine, and reign supreme over a Swiss cheese castle. And Jack Cat thought he would have to spend the day all alone!
Lisa Grubb's lovable Happy Dog, already a presence on posters and jigsaw puzzles sold around the world, makes his picture book debut in bold, eye-catching colors. Bring him home for a friend young children will adore.

PreSchool-Grade 2-Jack Cat spends a rainy Saturday with his paints and easel. He creates a new friend, Happy Dog, who literally jumps off the canvas with ever-ready energy and a sense of fun. At first, the pup runs outside but when his color begins to wash off, he realizes that he, too, must stay indoors. After making more pictures and engaging in creative play with them, the feline draws a field of flowers for his friend and they nap, Jack Cat on the couch and Happy Dog in the picture on the wall. While the interaction between the "real" and the imaginary is not a new concept in picture books, here the edges are blurred in such a way that readers will buy into this fantasy within a fantasy. The energy of both worlds is consistent, having been established principally through the art. Jack Cat and Happy Dog are equal in their largesse and childlike personalities. Swirls, dots, heavy brush strokes, and plenty of movement lines combine with dense primary and secondary colors to create dynamic acrylic paintings that pop off the page. This exuberant book will ignite readers' senses and imaginations. They might well wish they had a big blue dog to call their friend and a paintbrush by their side.
