PreS. The Barkers, Morgie and Moffie, twin dogs, and their little brother Marcos, are popular characters, so it makes sense to feature them in these beginning books about colors and numbers. But this may be slightly confusing for children who don't know that Marcos is adopted--and Spanish speaking. In Colors, Morgie tells his brother he's going to teach him the names of colors. Marcos, with a thought balloon coming from his head, repeats the word colors in Spanish, but with a question mark. As each color is named in English, Marcos says the word silently in Spanish. The last spread shows Marcos spouting off color names in English to Morgie. The pattern is the same in Counts, where Moffie teaches Marcos numbers that he says silently in Spanish. The bright, bordered pictures will be easy for kids to look at and learn from; the objects used for Marcos to practice on are all things children like--books, toys, and crayons. The thick pages are good for young hands to turn but are thinner than those in traditional baby books. A nice link for bilingual children. Ilene Cooper
